HONG KONG - Taiwanese singer Jay Chou confirmed his status as one of Chinese pop's top acts at the 12th Chinese Music Awards ceremony in Hong Kong on Wednesday night.
He won five awards, including Best and Most Popular Male Singer in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Also named Best Singer-songwriter in Hong Kong and Taiwan, he got another nod for his music video, Nocturne, which was crowned Most Popular Video in these regions.
In his speech, he called for more unity - and less animosity - in the Chinese Pop industry.
"Let the media draw comparisons between us. We should measure ourselves only by our own yardsticks,'' he said backstage.
Fellow Taiwanese star Jolin Tsai and Chinese actress-singer Vicki Zhao each bagged two awards at the ceremony organised by Channel V music network, which honours the best musical talents in Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China.
Tsai was the Most Popular Female Singer in Hong Kong and Taiwan, while Malaysian Fish Leong was the Best Singer in the two regions.
Conspicuously absent in the list of winners were some of Hong Kong's biggest stars, including Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, Leo Ku and Joey Yung.
Instead, mainland Chinese acts were a heavy presence. Zhao won for Most Popular Chinese Female Singer and Most Popular Video for Shang Guan Yan and I.
The Best Mainland Male Singer was Xu Wei. Best Mainland Female Singer was Wang Rong. The Extraordinary Achievement In The Music Industry Prize went to mainland singer Tian Zhen.
Taiwanese band Mayday won the prize for Best Band in Hong Kong and Taiwan for the fifth year in a row.
In a poignant moment, Taiwanese newcomer Alan Ko, who has won the Best Newcomer in Hong Kong and Taiwan award, dedicated his win to his late father, stuntman Blacky Ko Shouliang.
South Korean pop star Se7en also showed off fancy dance moves in a performance, while Chou wrapped up the show with two of his songs, including one which he performed playing a grand piano.
